From the Technion President

The story of the Rappaport Family Institute for Research in the Medical Sciences – like that of the Technion, and, indeed the State of Israel – is one of a pioneering vision, the understanding that the future of medical research lies in an interdisciplinary approach that brings together outstanding researchers from diverse fields from Israel and abroad, to come together, share, collaborate and inspire. True to its Technion DNA, the Rappaport Family Institute was, and remains today, truly an innovator and entrepreneur in the field of medical research.

The achievements of the Rappaport Institute, now begining its fourth decade, have placed it at the forefront of basic and applied medical research, creating new wellsprings of knowledge leading to important breakthroughs for the benefit of all mankind, including Israel’s first Nobel Prize in science, won by Professors Avram Hershko and Aaron Ciechanover for their groundbreaking discovery of ubiquitin, the compound responsible for protein degradation in cells.

The Technion is forever grateful to the late Bruce Rappaport, whose far-sighted generosity made possible the establishment of this world-class research center. And we are delighted that Bruce and his wife Ruth – ad mea ve’esrim − have passed down their love of the Technion, and of knowledge and discovery, to the next generation of the Rappaport family.
