INAUGURATION OF RAPPAPORT INSTITUTE'S CENTER FOR TRANSLATIONAL GENETICS

The inauguration of the newly established Center for Translational Genetics was held on June 11th, 2008, at the Rappaport Institute. Those present at the proceedings included Mrs Ruth Rappaport; Mr. Bruce Rappaport; Mrs Irith Rappaport; Prof. Karl Skorecki, Director of the Rappaport Institute; Prof. Ido Perlman, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine; Prof. Raphael Beyar, Director General of Rambam Medical Center; Prof. Yitzhak Appeloig, President of the Technion and other members of the Rappaport Institute Board of Directors.

2008 Annual David Shoham Z"l prize Award Ceremony

The David Shoham Z''l prize is awarded annually to six graduate students in recognition of their outstanding achievements. The awards ceremony is held at the end of the academic year and each of the winners delivers a short presentation of his/her research project.

PROF. MICHAEL AVIRAM'S NEW INVENTION RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PRODUCTION OF ANTIOXIDANT RICH WHITE WINE

For the last 20 years, Prof. Michael Aviram has been investigating the role of antioxidants, mainly dietary antioxidants, in the fight against atherosclerosis. Prof. Aviram, who is the Head of the Lipid Research Laboratory at the Rappaport Research Institute, has now developed a method for increasing the amount of antioxidants in white wine which is poor in grape skin polyphenolic antioxidants.

The study of rare inherited disorders offers unique opportunities to get insight into basic biological processes of potential relevance to extremely common diseases in humans. A study, led by Prof. Eli Sprecher of Rambam Medical Center and the Rappaport Institute and Faculty of Medicine at the Technion, and published this month in the prestigious American Journal of Human Genetics, remarkably illustrates this principle.

Prof. Aaron Ciechanover Elected Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences

Nobel Prize laureate in chemistry, Research Prof. Aaron Ciechanover of the Technion's Rappaport
Faculty of Medicine and Research Institute, is one of the new members of the American Academy of
Arts and Sciences. The Academy is one of the oldest and most distinguished associations in the US
(it was founded in 1780) and one of the largest independent research centers in that country.
